Due to the high cost of these basic necessities, shelters often have to limit the number of cats that they can save and provide homes for. A cat castle and a full belly can go a long way for the well-being of shelter cats and kittens. Through proper vaccination, animals’ risk of disease is cut down or eliminated, leaving shelter volunteers more time to find good homes for these cats. Animals that are healthy, happy, and well fed stand a much better chance of being adopted.

Change For Animals Foundation

One of the stories that we are saddest to cover is the South Korean dog meat market where dogs are farmed for their meat. This year, however, the Change for Animals Foundation joined with Humane Society International to rescue 57 dogs and puppies who were supposed to go to market. The dogs were placed in shelters in San Fransisco, and the farmer who had them agreed to use his lands for other agricultural purposes. It may not mean victory for the war against dog farming, but it is certainly a huge battle won.

Donating for animals

Its simple, add a big bag of dog food on your shopping list. Then drop the bag of dog food at your local animal shelter.

You may want add a toy or two. Often some shelters offer a place for newbie people to meet future pets in a private room. The toys in these rooms and in their pens are often in rough shape. Think about providing some toys that may lead to a pet being adopted with controlled play. It will also provide a smile for the pet.

Fake a visit to the animal shelter and pick an animal to play with, outside of shelter staff these pets could use some cheering up and you may also benefit from this encounter.

Adopt or foster a pet. Fostering pets allow the animals to become sociable in meeting others. Some just need a break from their cages. Some may need some recovery from illness or spay/neuter services. Sometimes the shelter may be overwhelmed with other pets.

Owning a dog – Your Responsibilities

Do you want a canine companion? Do you understand what you will be responsible once you take possession of your dog? There are many responsibilities which come with dog ownership, and they start the first time you bring your puppy home. This article will show you the ropes and get you ready for your new best friend.

Groom your dog regularly. A dog requires constant grooming to keep his coat in tip top condition. Make sure that your dog is completely relaxed before you start the grooming session; this is especially important if he is excitable. Keep the session quite short (5 to 10 minutes at most) until he is comfortable with the idea of being groomed. Most importantly – be sure to praise him and offer a treat after a successful grooming session!

Much like people in the United States, many dogs are overweight. Having a few extra pounds on their frame can lead to a number of health problems, like cancer or diabetes. Many owners simply overfeed their pets. Talk to your veterinarian about how many calories your dog needs each day so you can adjust their meals accordingly.

When training your puppy or dog, keep the sessions short! Experts say that a dog has the attention span of a small child, sometimes less, and that longer sessions will actually cause him to forget everything you’ve learned together. Use positive reinforcement and limit your training sessions to no more than 15 minutes.

Always be prepared to pick up after your dog with a scoop and bag. Although most people think that this is simply a polite thing to do so that others don’t step in it, your dog’s excrement is actually hazardous!

It contains a bacterium that can contaminate local supplies when it washes through to ground water.

Never allow your dog to leave your yard without a leash even if he seems very trustworthy and calm. A wild animal may get his attention and cause him to run off, or he may have a bad situation with others and their dogs. Understand that any damage your dog causes to other people and their pets is your responsibility, so you need to always use caution when off your property.

Have a rotating schedule for dog-related responsibilities in your home. It’s not fair for one person to always be taking care of him, and he’ll feel more like a family pet if everyone pitches in. Kids often lose interest in a pet and leave the work to parents, but it’s important that you teach them to keep up the commitment!

If you are a very enthusiastic owner of a pure-bred dog, join your local AKC. They are an active social group where you can share your love for your dog, learn a lot and make new friends too. The experience can also help prepare you and your dog for entering contests and winning shows!

Animal Shelters

City animal shelters allow you to adopt a pet the same day. City shelters take in as many 50 to 15000+ pets per day depending on size of city. Adoption fees and spay/neuter services are minimal. They don’t have the resources to visit homes of potential adopters. Depending on some shelters, you may find some interesting pets beyond dog and cat these may include horses, cows, rats, pigs, birds, rabbits, ferrets. I know of a local shelter that provided a home for an iguana it had caught while roaming the parking lot of a university. Maybe it escaped from the science lab. Animal Shelters may not always know what breed the actual pet is, in most cases its usually referred to as a mixed breed. For the prevention of additional mixed breeds all available pets are neutered or spayed before an adoption can occur. Intake of purebreds at a city shelter may be placed on hold or foster care while a rescue breed club can be found.

Rescue breed groups require a home and yard inspection to fulfill their own programs. Adoption fees may be three or four times the cost of a city shelter to pay for their program. Many rescue groups  don’t have a main shelter but rely on a volunteer foster network.

AKC Breeders usually sell their pups on a contract, but the breeder has an option to opt out of contract stipulations. Fees from a breeder for an adult may run about $500 to $2000+ for a puppy.

So You want to foster a pet?

What is the purpose of the foster program?

• Provide a temporary home for companion animals who:
  1. have special needs (e.g., nursing moms, orphaned puppies/kittens, cats with an upper respiratory infection, dogs with kennel cough, cats/dogs with minor injuries);
  2. need socialization;
  3. are youngsters under the age of 8 weeks;
  4. do not show well in a kennel situation, but are otherwise deemed adoptable;
  5. are purebreds awaiting placement in breed rescue; and
  6. are in need of additional training to improve their chances of finding a life-long home;
• Alleviate space issues at the Shelter, thereby decreasing euthanasia and increasing adoptions.

What is your role/commitment as a foster guardian?
We ask that you provide:

• A humane environment founded on quality food, fresh water, reasonable shelter, affection, and attention;
• Basic training using positive methods;
• Transportation of your foster companion to off-site adoption events;
• Transportation to the Shelter for clients interested in adopting your foster companion; and
• Regular and timely updates on the status of your foster companion.

What issues should be considered before agreeing to participate in the foster program?

• Companions currently in your home may be exposed to contagious diseases, and they should be inoculated against the more common ones, e.g., distemper, parvo, kennel cough, etc.
• Should you choose special needs companions, you should have a space in your home to isolate them from your other companions, at least until the status of their health is known.
• The background of your foster companion may not be known, especially in the case of those who come to the Shelter as strays. Guardians of relinquished companions do not always complete a personality profile on those companions. Moreover, even if they do complete the profile, they may, in some instances, put a better “face” on their companion’s behavior/health than is warranted, probably in the hopes of improving the companion’s chances of adoption.
• It is difficult to predict how long a foster companion will be in your charge. The length of stay will depend on space at the Shelter, on how well socialization/training is progressing, on how long it takes for a sick or injured critter to get well, or on the age and development of puppies and kittens. Your commitment to a particular companion may range from a couple of weeks to a couple of months.
• There are basic expenses that accompany fostering: quality food, food and water dishes, litter and litter boxes, toys and treats, leads and collars, and a crate. Whenever possible, the Shelter may be able to provide some supplies.
• The Shelter will determine appropriate medical treatment and can provide medications/treatment for treating upper respiratory infections, heartworm, kennel cough, and for minor injuries.
• The Shelter can offer assistance in providing formula for kittens and puppies.

Pedigrees?

You can have a cat with a pedigree for as much as $1200. You can adopt a kitten or a cat at your local humane society for as little $20. My past dalmatians have been rescued or adopted but how do you decide on pedigree or pound? I suppose it has more to do with your desires to have a pet and how it will be a member of the family. Will your pet be a companion, fur baby, or do you want to show your pet?

There are many pet shelters, many with purebred pets and mixture of others. I’d rather find a purebred pet at a shelter than pay the high cost of a breeder with papers. A purebred pet is more than likely going to have a set standard of care and previous breeding will mean the pet will have a healthier longer life. The puppy mills however breed many unhealthy pets, their only concern is breeding more babies and collecting money than caring about things like whether the dog is deaf, blind, may develop hip dysplasia, may be harmful or mean, may be heart worm positive, etc.

I have owned two dalmatians in the past. My beloved Bongo passed away last Sept and though I have been casually hunting for another dalmatian. It can be stressful wanting to have another dalmatian but knowing it can not replace your forever companion. On Friday 10/30/15, I received a phone call from someone I knew that help me train my first dalmatian so many years ago. She had been informed of my pursuit of finding another dalmatian and said she knew of a breeder that needed to find homes for several dalmatians due to personal family issues. Then later that evening I received an fb pm from another breeder. Responsible akc breeders sometimes comes across pets whom are not working out and under contract allow to accept animal returns. It seems she had a dalmatian returned to her to be re-homed and wanted to know if I was interested. I’m still uncertain if I will accept another dalmatian at this time but it worth seeing if a match can be made. For me and my family its not about accepting another dalmatian, its about having an addition to the family. As forever means forever. A companion through all emotions and activities that life brings forward.
